Home Master TMAFC-ERP Artesian Full Contact System

In the first of our Home Master reverse osmosis reviews, we will take a look at the TMAFC-ERP under sink system, which features 7-stages of filtration removing up to 99% of water contaminants and adding calcium and magnesium after the purification process.

Home Master (former Tap Master) is a brand run by Perfect Water Technologies, an American manufacturing company based in Scottsdale, Arizona, which was found in 2002. The company is known for its fantastic customer service.

The TMAFC-ERP comes with a built-in non-electric permeate pump to reduce water wastage by up to 80% (1 – 1.5 gallons wasted instead of the average 4-6 gallons with other systems for every gallon of filtered water) and increase water production by up to 50%. As you can see, the additional permeate pump not only saves you money, but also makes the system more efficient with a faster flow rate to the faucet.

Further advantages are:

  • Easy-to-change Filters: Filters use an “all-in-one” design. They are incorporated into the disposable filter housing. Therefore filter replacement is fast (requires no wrenches) and the chance for water leakages is reduces, since microorganisms and biofilm cannot accumulate in the filter housing.
  • Filters need to be replaced only once a year/every 2000 gallons.
  • Scope of Supply includes storage tank, chrome faucet, adapters with shut-off valve and drain saddle.
  • No plumber needed: The tubing is color-coded and installation instructions also direct you to a series of online videos, which outline the installation process step by step, if needed.

iSpring RCC7 75 GPD WQA Gold Seal Certified RO Drinking Water Filter Review

The Good

iSpring RCC7 75 GPD WQA Gold Seal Certified Filtration Unit

The iSpring RCC7 reverse osmosis system can provide up to 75 gallons of filtered water per day, which is sufficient even for larger households. Thereby it removes more than 1,000 pollutants from the water in a smooth and almost noise-free workflow.

As we are already used to, all parts of this iSpring system such as a polypropylene filter, granular activated carbon and the reverse osmosis membrane are Gold Seal certified by the Water Quality Association (WQA). The certificate ensures bottled water quality.

In a test conducted in Las Vegas the iSpring RCC7 was able to reduce the amount of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in tap water by 95% from 506 ppm (parts per million) to 25 ppm, showing that the system works effectively under real-life conditions.

The installation process is easy to follow with additional videos and technical support readily available.

The not so Good

Every reverse osmosis water filter system wastes some water in order to clean it. This unit wastes about five gallons for every gallon of clean water. This sounds a lot and it is! But keep in mind that it still represents the market average.

iSpring has written only one instruction manual for both UV- and non UV-systems. Keep that in mind when installing the system to not get confused on where the hoses connect.

Bottom Line

Although the iSpring RCC7 has its flaws, the advantages still outweigh the disadvantages. More than 3,000 customer reviews show that the system is reliable and of superb quality. Make sure to check out some of the reviews.

Watts Premier 4-Stage Reverse Osmosis System Review

The Good

Watts Premier 4-Stage RO System

We want to provide you with the best under sink reverse osmosis water filter reviews. Therefore we need to review a wide range of water filter models from many different manufacturers. So let’s take a look at the 4-stage ro unit from Watts Premier, a manufacturer we haven’t had the chance to lay our eyes upon yet:

Premier was founded in 1989 and has been acquired by Watts Water Technologies, Inc. in 2001. Premier is now just one of Watts multiple brands with headquarters located in Peoria, Arizona.

The RO-Pure 4-stage under sink system by Watts Premier offers you high quality at a reasonable price. It’s perfect for people on a budget.

WQA tested and certified 5-micron sediment and carbon block pre filters and a reverse osmosis membrane remove up to 96 percent of dirt, rust, silt, chloramines, chlorines and other solids that make the water taste and smell unnatural. Please be aware that a minimum incoming water pressure of 40 psi is needed for the system to operate as intended.

A faucet with a built-in electronic monitor lets you know when it’s time to change the filters, which is convenient for people who tend to forget about regular filter replacements. It is important to replace filters regularly in order to keep water quality on a consistent level. To do that, there is no need to turn off the water supply due to the built-in shut-off valve.

The not so Good

A larger group of customers have not been satisfied with the performance of the Watts Premier 4-stage reverse osmosis system. Criticism has been raised, claiming water leakages would occur after running the system for a couple of months. And in fact this is a problem also known to the manufacturer.

Watts Premier customer service offers a wide range of possible solutions and makes you go through many different steps, even though it might be already clear that the filtration system has simply failed. In this case the 3-year warranty does not help you either.

Bottom Line

The Watts Premier RO-Pure 4-stage system offers good value for the money, if the system does not start to leak after a while. In case of leakage customer service might not be helpful either, which is why we recommend you to opt for a different model that is guaranteed to run smoothly over time.

More Reverse Osmosis Water Filter System Reviews
If you still have not found what you are looking for, more detailed product reviews can be found here:

The following guide addresses frequently asked questions and provides detailed information regarding ro technology.

What is Reverse Osmosis Water

drinking glassBefore we discuss more complicated topics in our buying guide, let us begin with answering the simple question, what reverse osmosis water is.

Just to recap: Osmosis describes the natural flow of a liquid or gas, for example water, through a semipermeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration. For illustration purposes:

Let’s say we have a tank with liquid solutions in it, solution 1 and 2 separated by a semipermeable membrane – semipermeable meaning that not all, but only certain substances, in our case water, can pass through it. Solution 1 has 100g of common salt dissolved in it. Solution 2 has 10g of common salt dissolved in it. Water molecules will now pass through the semipermeable membrane from solution 2 to solution 1 in order to balance the salt concentration in both liquids.

Reverse Osmosis describes the movement of molecules into the opposite direction. This can be achieved by applying external pressure on the high solute concentration side. What remains is purified water with little to no dissolved salt on one side of the membrane and water with a high salt concentration on the other.

If you want to learn more about the reverse osmosis process itself, read this blog post.

Now, what is reverse osmosis (drinking) water? As the name suggests, ro water is water that was purified by utilizing a reverse osmosis filtration system. Depending on the feed water and the system itself, the filtered water may or may not be safe for human consumption. Some water that comes out of a ro system might be suitable for gardening or to fill your fish tank, but that’s about it.

Where to Buy Reverse Osmosis Water

Where you can buy reverse osmosis water depends on the intended use. As indicated above, if you intend to fill your fish tank, it’s probably best to go to your local aquatics retailer or some LFS. 1 gallon might cost about 30 cents depending on how much water you need of course and how often you’d have to go and pick it up.

shopping cart iconIf you are looking for bottled drinking water, just go to Walmart or any other supermarket. They will have a broad range of brands selling mostly tap water purified by reverse osmosis. Two examples are Aquafina and Dasani.

If your demand for filtered water is quite high, it’s always an option to install a purification system under your kitchen sink and do the filtration yourself. It is also more convenient than driving to town each time you are thirsty and run out of water and at the same time you protect the environment since you are using less plastic.

What is a Reverse Osmosis System

You now know what osmosis and reverse osmosis is. But what exactly is a ro system and how does it work?

To reverse the natural flow of water molecules through a semipermeable membrane you need to apply external pressure. This is what a residential ro system does. It utilizes the pressure in the water system of your house to push the molecules through the membrane, where it leaves up to 99 percent of all contaminants behind.

But the membrane at the heart of the purification unit is not the only filtration stage water has to pass through. All residential ro filtration systems that we know of have integrated at least 1 additional pre-filter and most of the times 1 additional post-filter stage. These stages filter out rust, sand, dirt and other coarse impurities, remove taste and odors or even add minerals like magnesium back into the water to increase its pH-value. So you see, a ro system is much more than just a membrane and a tank.

How to Install a RO Filter Unit

A picture says more than a thousand words, and a video says even more than that. If you want to find out how to install your filtration system, take a look here:

What does Reverse Osmosis Remove from Water

What does reverse osmosis remove from water? This is a question that gets asked quite often. And again the correct answer would be, that it depends. It depends on the model you purchased and on how many and which filtration stages it has and how good they work, it depends on the age and condition of filters and membrane and whether or not they are clogged up. It even depends on the feed water running into the system, since no filter can remove what isn’t already there yet and if contamination of your water is really bad, it’s simply harder to remove all pollutants.

But there are also some substances a ro system cannot remove at all no matter how good works or how good its condition is. Therefore in the next section you will find a list of substances that can and cannot be removed, if secondary issues don’t play a role:

Substances that can be removed

Ions and Metals:

  • Arsenic, Aluminum
  • Barium
  • Cadmium, Calcium, Chloride, Chromium, Copper
  • Fluoride
  • Iron
  • Lead
  • Magnesium, Manganese, Mercury
  • Nitrate
  • Potassium
  • Radium
  • Selenium, Silver, Sodium, Sulfate
  • Zinc

Particles:

  • Asbestos
  • Protozoan cysts
  • Cryptosporidium

Pesticides:

  • Endrin
  • Heptachlor
  • Lindane
  • Pentachlorophenol

Substances that cannot be removed

Dissolved Gases:

  • Hydrogen sulfide

other Pesticides and Solvents and Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs)

spraying pesticides on field

Since most ro purifiers feature additional filtration stages, here is a list of contaminants activated carbon (AC) filters, which are commonly used in conjunction with an ro membrane, help to remove:

Substances AC filters can remove

Ions and Metals:

  • Chlorine
  • Radon

Organic Chemicals:

  • Benzen1
  • Carbon tetrachloride
  • Dichlorobenzene
  • Toluene, Trichloroethylene, Total Trihalomethanes (THMs)

Pesticides:

  • 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene
  • 2,4-D, Atrazine

Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Fluoride?

An ro system’s ability to remove fluoride from water was part of the experiment conducted by Bruce Dvorak and Sharon Skipton from the University of Nebraska. The experiment has shown that ro systems are able to remove fluoride from water. Unfortunately Dvorak and Skipton did not specify to what extent (percentage) fluoride gets removed. But they also pointed out that a system’s ability to remove contaminants always depends on its condition.

Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Chlorine?

Chlorine is a gas and so small that it can simply pass through a semipermeable membrane. If you still want to remove it from your water, make sure to buy a ro system that features activated carbon filters. The experiment has shown that AC filters are able to eliminate chlorine

Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Sodium (Salt)?

To put it in a nutshell, yes it does. Compared to other substances, sodium gets removed to an exceptional high degree, too.

Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Lead?

Again, the experiment has shown that a reverse osmosis filtration unit is able to remove lead during the purification process.

Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Bacteria?

RO systems remove fluoride, chlorine, sodium, lead and so much more, but can it also remove bacteria? Yes, it can! Obviously there are many different bacterial strains that can be found in our water, but since bacteria is much larger than chlorine or fluoride, it gets easily rejected by a ro membrane and has no chance of passing through the other side.

How Much Water is Wasted with Reverse Osmosis

The ro filtration process wastes a lot of water. To be precise, about 80% of it on average goes to the drain and can’t be drunken. It’s possible to repurpose the water and use it for gardening or cleaning, but it holds an even higher concentration of impurities and could therefore be harmful to your health – make sure to not drink it!

Why does the Process Waste that much Water?

We already know that reverse osmosis depends on external pressure. The pressure “forces” water molecules to pass through the semipermeable membrane. The molecules leave all impurities behind and come out on the other side of the membrane. But lead, fluoride and pesticides don’t just vanish. They are flushed out of the system via a second water line usually connected to the kitchen drain. This is how water is wasted.

The good news is that in general, the higher the pressure, the more molecules will pass through the membrane and wasting decreases. If the pressure in your home is not high enough, you can purchase a permeate pump, which increases pressure and reduces wastewater by up to eighty percent. The Home Master TMAFC-ERP is a great example for a system that has a permeate pump included in the scope of delivery.

Is Reverse Osmosis Water Safe to Drink and Healthy?

Many people ask if ro water is safe and benefits someone’s health or if it’s bad for the human organism and should be avoided.

healthy iconWhy RO Water is Good for you

  1. First and foremost, ro water is free from contaminants that pollute the public water supply. Even in the US water quality has deteriorated in the last decades. Soil pollution, increased use of pharmaceuticals and waste disposal are only three of many reasons, why the quality is not as high as it used to be. Reverse osmosis systems remove harmful contaminants including bacteria and most viruses.
  2. RO water tastes much better. It is far more likely that you drink more water, if it was filtered before. We all know how important it is to stay hydrated.
  3. Having a purification system installed in your home, there’s no need to buy bottled water anymore. It’s an easy way to save money and all upfront costs will be covered soon.
  4. Buying no more bottled water also means using less plastic bottles. If you rely 100% on filtered tap water, you can reduce environmental pollution significantly.
  5. Reverse osmosis is an established technology that has been used in the food industry for years. Many bottled water companies also use the technology to process their water.
  6. RO is 100% mechanical meaning no artificial chemicals are used during the process. If no additional chemicals are being used, they cannot harm you.
  7. Do you love to surprise your friends with a delicious cocktail on the weekend? Have you ever been annoyed, because your ice cubes where all milky? Ice cubes made out of purified water are crystal clear, since all gas and contaminants are removed. In order to make the perfect cocktail, use filtered water for your ice cubes from now on.

stethoscope iconWhy RO Water is “Bad” for your Health

  1. There is one aspect about ro filtered water that we should not overlook. It’s free from harmful substances – which is great – but it also lacks important minerals and ions that are lost during filtration. Calcium is one of these minerals and our daily requirement for it is covered by drinking water by up to 20%. The remaining 80% are obtained from food.
If you want to make sure to compensate those 20%, simply add calcium and other minerals back into the water after filtration by using a standard electrolyte blend for example. Some systems like the Express Water ROALK5D already have a built-in remineralization stage that supplies calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.

Reverse Osmosis vs. Water Softener

People visit our website and ask, “wouldn’t it be better to purchase a water softener instead of a reverse osmosis filtration system?” This is a tough question to answer, not because ro systems and water softeners are so similar to each other, but because they are completely different and fulfill different purposes.

A ro purification unit removes contaminants from water with the goal to make it safe for human consumption. Even sea water and wastewater can be recycled this way. Softeners are there to simply reduce the hardness of water by ion exchange.

Hard Water

Water is defined as ‘hard’, if it contains large amounts of calcium and magnesium ions and sometimes other minerals. Hardness is measured in ‘grains per gallon’ (gpg, 1 grain = 64.8mg of calcium/magnesium ions) or mg/l. The values for soft, slightly hard and hard water are:

mg/lgpgHardness Degree
<17<1.0soft
17.1-601.0-3.5slightly hard
60-1203.5-7.0moderately hard
120-1807.0-10.5hard

Two main problems are caused by hard water. First of all, it causes scaling in the inside of pipes, heaters, coffee makers, washing machines etc. The second big problem, which results from the first, is that clogged pipes reduce water flow and in extreme cases a pipe can block completely. What happens next is your washing breaks down, your coffee maker starts leaking and your heater needs replacement.

In order to prevent your household appliances from getting damaged and reduce water hardness, you can take different precautions:
chemical laundry softener

  1. Filter your water using a distillator,
  2. manually add a chemical softener to your water,
  3. filter your water using a reverse osmosis system or
  4. run it through a water softener.

A commercial distillator needs some time and a lot of energy to heat enough water for your household. It is an effective process, but not very economical.

Manually added chemicals soften water in small batches, but also make it undrinkable. They are unhandy and further wear out clothes and are not always good for the environment. This leaves us with using a ro system or running the water through a softener.

How does a water softener work?

Water softeners remove positively charged ions (usually calcium and magnesium ions), which are dissolved in water and cause ‘hardness’, and exchange them with other ions such as sodium or potassium ions. Thereby, a softener operates in automatic, semi-automatic or manual mode. Calcium and magnesium ions that are removed from the water are stored in a tank and flushed down the drain from time to time.

The reason why softeners are quite popular is that they are oftentimes cheaper than multistage ro units and don’t require much maintenance. But they fulfill a different purpose than a purification system does.

If you want to filter out impurities and enjoy great tasting drinking water, softeners aren’t sufficient. They protect the piping system in your house more than they protect you. In this case, the safest and most ergonomic solution definitely is a reverse osmosis system. However, if you only want to reduce water hardness and extend the lifespan of your washing machine, a water softener is also an option.
